Let the Flowers Look at You

Snow still clings to the mountaintop, but we hear the ice draining away. The hiking paths are being cleared of branches. The gardens will soon display their greens, and we’ll plant marigolds by the farmhouse porch.

Which reminds us of our late founder, Jean-Claude van Itallie, who loved sitting on the front porch and loved flowers very much. In his book, Tea with Demons—Games of Transformation, Jean-Claude proposed:

Let the Flowers Look at You

Find a bed or bunch of vibrantly colored flowers that attract you... Stand for a couple of minutes looking at the flowers. Simply look at them. Take your time.

Then let the flowers look at you. Drop your defenses against the flowers’ gaze. Be vulnerable and open to the flowers seeing you… [watch the video here]

Shantigar is a place where you can see and be seen. A sanctuary and seedbed, whether you’re forest bathing, meditating, or venturing into creative work. As Rachel Carson, the great biologist who inspired the environmental movement, wrote:

The values of contact with the natural world are available to anyone who will place himself under the influence of a lonely mountain top—or the sea—or the stillness of a forest; or who will stop to think about so small a thing as the mystery of a growing seed… I believe that the more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.

2024 Programs

We’re thrilled to present Shantigar’s 2024 Calendar which includes online programs, daytime events, weekend workshops, and extended experiences. Our residential workshops are small and inclusive. Our online workshops draw people from around the world.

Explore theatre through intimate conversations. Weave yoga into wellness weekends. Refresh your approach to drawing, indoors and outside. Dive deeper into meditation and dharma teachings. Experiment with new ways of moving and new sources for singing.

Grow the Community

Last year, a generous friend helped us launch the Jean-Claude van Itallie Scholarship Fund with a $3000 matching opportunity. Since then, Shantigar has received an additional $1000. Many thanks to all!

Please consider a gift to meet the match. We want to grow a diverse, flourishing community. For the 2024 workshops, we’ve already provided $750 in scholarships. The more we receive, the more we’ll give away.
