Shantigar provides beautiful surroundings and quiet friendly support to an artist-in-residence.  The artist-in-residence, in turn, is invited to share meals with workshop participants and teachers, to give talks and take part in workshops.

visiting artists    "For me the word 'Shantigar’ translates as the perfect place to write.  Even before Jean-Claude created the wonderful Shantigar Foundation, I worked on major projects on Davenport Road including As Is which premiered on Broadway in 1985 and the libretto to The Ghosts of Versailles which premiered in 1991 at the Metropolitan Opera.
In the summer of 2000 at Shantigar I worked on the libretto to Morning Star, commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.  Where else would I find the peace and quiet to concentrate, the natural beauty that stimulates the imagination, the friendly and supportive atmosphere that I so desperately need?  Since the creation of the Foundation, the mission of Shantigar has become progressively clearer as a healing and nourishing center of creativity.  I support Shantigar in every way I can and urge others to do so.  Long may Shantigar flourish!"
