RECONSTRUCTION OF THE THEATER BARN
In December, 1999 when the careful renovations on Shantigar's cathedral-like century-old barn were nearly complete, 175 people celebrated the millennium in the barn. Three weeks later, the barn burned down. Many from nearby towns came to mourn it. Today the barn site with its old stone walls, greenery, and large stone Buddha feels like the ruins of an ancient temple. But van Itallie asserts, "The barn is only temporarily invisible."   We'd like to rebuild the barn as a performance space.  We need $200,000 to start work with kitchen, eating and sleeping spaces.  It will take $2,000,000 to completely rebuild the theater barn.

Now Shantigar has building plans.  We want to rebuild the barn as a theater, and also to build Cloud Mountain Community living center.

Shantigar’s architecturally innovative and ecologically “green” Cloud Mountain community center will be located on the edge of woods looking down on a ninety-acre pasture.  It will house workshop, healing, meditating, and eating spaces – and thirty individually owned dwellings of Shantigar Community members.

Shantigar Community members will come to their Shantigar homes to see plays, take workshops, hear teachings, or simply to retreat and walk in the woods.  When community members aren’t in residence, their dwellings will be occupied by visiting artists and teachers, and by participants in workshops.

Shantigar needs seed money for its “barn-raising” – a campaign to sell the planned thirty individual dwellings.  The sales of the individual dwellings in the Cloud Mountain community center will also pay for rebuilding the barn and for the common spaces in Cloud Mountain.

You can help us raise the money needed by purchasing the various books and other items that friends of Shantigar have donated. Please visit the For Sale section of our website.
