Since the barn burned in 2000, we've held summer workshops in a large, graceful white wedding tent with windows on the woods. Workshop participants have valiantly camped out, rented rooms in local bed-and-breakfasts, or stayed as guests in Jean-Claude's house.
Now Shantigar has building plans. We want to rebuild the barn as a theater, and also to build Cloud Mountain Community living center.
Shantigar’s architecturally innovative and ecologically “green” Cloud Mountain community center will be located on the edge of woods looking down on a ninety-acre pasture. It will house workshop, healing, meditating, and eating spaces – and thirty individually owned dwellings of Shantigar Community members.
Shantigar Community members will come to their Shantigar homes to see plays, take workshops, hear teachings, or simply to retreat and walk in the woods. When community members aren’t in residence, their dwellings will be occupied by visiting artists and teachers, and by participants in workshops.
Shantigar needs seed money for its “barn-raising” – a campaign to sell the planned thirty individual dwellings. The sales of the individual dwellings in the Cloud Mountain community center will also pay for rebuilding the barn and for the common spaces in Cloud Mountain. |
