This workshop will provide a context for you to explore and play with your voice’s range, texture and character and to experiment with the musical worlds you discover. The work includes singing and other approaches to music with voice. The weekend is open to anyone wishing to engage creatively with their voice, with or without previous training. The exact nature of our workshop will vary according to the experience and wishes of each participant.

Jonathan Hart Makwaia has taught voice for over 40 years, leading workshops in more than 30 countries. He works at the Roy Hart Centre in France each summer where he served as musical director from 1975 to 1988 (and received an OBIE award for “Pagliacci” La MaMa ETC in NYC). Jonathan performs solo concerts for voice and piano throughout Europe, South America, and the USA, integrating contemporary, classical, and African influences with his Roy Hart Theatre background. His solo music for voice and piano can be heard on his CD, The Wild is Rising, which the NY Times described as “a spectacular display of vocal timbres and techniques.” Jonathan has taught at NYU’s Experimental Theatre Wing since 1989.
