Can sunflowers, asters, and goldenrod protect our bees from pathogens?
Moving from flower to flower, bees contribute to our global food supply and biodiversity. But bees and other insect pollinators are in decline as natural landscapes are converted for agriculture and other uses. Dr. Kate Borchardt’s research at UMass Amherst is revealing the conditions that support a large and healthy pollinator community.
Join us for an afternoon with Kate, who will present her study of 20 habitats in western Massachusetts. Afterwards, we'll walk to the blooming areas of Shantigar where Kate and her colleagues are conducting fieldwork.
Please bring a water bottle and wear clothing to protect against ticks.

Kate Borchardt, PhD. is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at UMass Amherst, working with Dr. Laura Figueroa and Dr. Lynn Adler. Her current projects include investigating which habitat traits are associated with reduced pathogen presence in pollinator communities. Kate received her PhD from Iowa State University, researching pollinator conservation habitat in agricultural landscapes, pollinator decision making, and wasp pollination effectiveness.
